The long, rectangular square between Altona train station and Altona town hall is largely designed as a park. It was originally laid out in 1897 as "Kaiserplatz". During the Weimar Republic it was renamed "Platz der Republik" in 1922. During the National Socialist era it was called "Adolf-Hitler-Platz" from 1933 onwards. After the merger of Hamburg and Altona it was renamed "Reichsplatz" in 1938, as there was already an "Adolf-Hitler-Platz" in Hamburg. After the Second World War the park was given the name it had in 1922.

With the relocation of the Altona train station, whose tracks previously took this place, an open space was created in the late 19th century, which was redesigned in 1895 to a park. The former station building was preserved and was extended representative to the town hall Altona.

The place was originally created in 1897 as "Kaiserplatz". In the period of the Weimar Republic in 1922 he was first renamed "Republic Square". During the period of National Socialism the place was called from 1933 "Adolf Hitler Square". After the merger of Hamburg and Altona, he was renamed in 1938 in "Reichsplatz", since there was already a homonymous place in Hamburg. After the end of the Second World War, the park got its present name again.

The site has large green areas with rhododendrons and other ornamental shrubs, as well as playgrounds and seating. In the northern half of the park is the Stuhlmannbrunnen, at the southern end of the park a memorial for killed Jews from Altona has been built.

On the west side, near the town hall, is the Altonaer Museum and the Altonaer Theater.

The Platz der Republik is a park-like square (formerly Kaiserplatz) between the Altona town hall and the current train station on the former track areas of the old train station. The donor was the Altonaer Stützsinstitut, a private bank founded in 1799 but no longer in existence, whose donations are commemorated by a memorial plaque from 1899. The impressive Stuhlmann fountain has also been on the site since 2000 and the Sol LeWitt monument to the Altona Jews since 1989. The square invites you to linger with its benches and boules courts.
