After about two years of construction, the school was officially opened as a girls' school on August 11, 1862.[2] Previously, the Coburg students were taught in various rooms, such as the hospital school at the vegetable market. In the first school year, there were 617 students, nine teachers and a principal. On November 10, 1883, on the occasion of Martin Luther's 400th birthday, a bust of Luther was erected in the arcade vestibule.[3] The bust was modeled by the sculptor Ernst Rietschel.[4]

During the inauguration of the Heiligkreuzschule on May 2, 1907, the former girls' school was renamed Lutherschule after Martin Luther. 14 classes were taught in the school building in 1936, which was closed on April 3, 1945 and only reopened for classes at the end of 1947. The elementary school was closed in 1973. After the neighboring Albertinum high school used the building for a few years, the Luther elementary school opened as a primary school in the fall of 1988 after a general renovation with 180 students.

In the 2008/09 school year, 123 students were taught in 5 classes. The school offers, among other things, extended lunchtime care and holiday care.[5]

From 2018 to 2022, the school building was converted into an educational center. The school has been using the two upper floors since then. A children's home is located on the ground floor and in the neighboring building at Goethestrasse 1.
