The Linden market square was laid out in 1894 as the new city center of the then still independent town of Linden on the site of the old village center. For this, the farms of the local farmers had to be bought up in lengthy negotiations. The courtyards and other houses were then torn down.
The New Lindender Town Hall, which was moved into in 1899, and the night watchman fountain, which was erected in 1896 and is now a listed building, are located on Linden market square. Trendy cafés and shops have settled around the market square.
In 1906 the writer and philosopher Hannah Arendt was born at number 2. She went to Berlin, Königsberg and Marburg as a student. In 1933, because of her Jewish origins, she fled the Nazis to Karlsbad and Paris and later lived in New York, where she died in 1975.

The night watchman's fountain was set up in 1896 at the instigation of the then deputy mayor of Linden, Hermann Heinrich Stephanus. The design by Hans Damann from Berlin had actually been submitted for the competition for the fountain on the Holzmarkt in Hanover's old town, but it was not selected. In an exhibition of all the submitted designs, Stephanus discovered the model of the "Thürmer", as Damann called the fountain, inspired by Hanover's last Türmer. He recommended it for the new Linden market square. The design met with resistance, however, as some Linden residents found it unworthy to put up "discarded" designs from the unpopular neighboring city of Hanover. But Stephen collected enough donations to finance the well. However, since Linden did not have a tradition of towers, the design was slightly revised and renamed the night watchman fountain.

A pretty fountain and a special photo with the colorful windows in the background.
