The old Jewish cemetery is located on Oberstrasse in the northern part of Hanover. It is located on a hill in the middle of an otherwise flat environment. The hill is the last of the ice age dunes that were carved together by the wind after the last ice age 200,000 years ago. Over the centuries, these inland dunes have been removed and used as building material. Only the dune of the Jewish cemetery is still visible. However, they are still present in Hanover street names, such as on the nearby Schneiderberg or the Lärchenberg in Oststadt. In 1673, the Guelph Duke Johann Friedrich prevented the dune on Oberstrasse from also being removed by decree. He wanted to protect the peace of the dead in the Jewish graves. The wall was later built to reinforce the protection.
In total there are around 700 tombstones in the cemetery, which was laid out in 1550 and used until 1864. The cemetery is not open to the public.
