The Schlossgartenbahn Karlsruhe runs every year from Good Friday to All Saints at weekends and public holidays and between the end of May and the beginning of October also during the week. However, it does not drive in bad weather and during large events in the castle garden. A round trip takes about 15-20 minutes. On Sundays and public holidays, the steam locomotive is usually used, with a steam surcharge being added to the fare.

On the occasion of the Federal Garden Show in 1967, the palace garden was renovated and developed in the style of an English landscape park. The palace garden lake was also redesigned and the palace garden railway was put into operation. The railway was originally only intended to operate during the Federal Garden Show, but it was not dismantled afterwards.
