When the antique shop is open, you can also drive into the Bothkamp estate—we do it on Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. 😉. The White Manor House, however, is private.

The nature reserve with the identifier number 128 is located in a moraine landscape south of Kirchbarkau, between Bordesholm and Preetz. It protects an extensive lowland area formed during the Weichselian glaciation, including the two lakes Lütjensee and Hochfelder See. The lakes, which are crossed by waterways and share a common outflow to the Bothkamper See, are surrounded by extensive silting zones. The lowland area is predominantly near-natural. It is largely occupied by fen and wet forests, reed beds, and sedge marshes. In addition, there are tall herbaceous plants and wet grassland. The somewhat higher and drier elevations are dominated by grassland. Hedgerows and scattered deciduous forest communities and woodlands are also found. The grassland areas are used for agriculture. Some areas are extensively grazed by Galloway cattle. The grassland areas are no longer drained and are thus becoming waterlogged.

Definitely avoid it in June, as there are more mosquitoes in the ponds than we've ever seen in Sweden!

A weathered iron plaque reads: “In 1819 the district hunter master chamberlain. W. von Warnstedt observed this lark wooding. - He was happy about his planting and his grateful descendants were happy. 1834"

The stone table seating is located at an intersection on the main hiking trail in the forest, the Hauberg Weg from 1817.

The view from the seating area over the pond is really worth seeing.

'Diek' is Low German and in addition to the meaning 'deich' it also means 'pond' - here Förster's pond.

The headwaters of the Eider, the "Dröge(n) Eider", flows into Lake Bothkamper coming from the south and leaves it in the southwest near Bissee with the name "Eider". The Bothkamper See and its surroundings are part of the FFH area, the area of the "Upper Eider including lakes", which includes the entire upper reaches of the Eider from the Bothkamper See to the eighth weir.
