The revolving grandstand (Otáčivý hlediště) of the natural open-air theatre - the most visited in the Czech Republic - dates back to 1958: the naturalised architect and set designer of Latvian origin, Joan Brehms, together with the then director of the South Bohemian Theatre, Otto Haas, suggested its construction. From the very beginning, the operator has been the South Bohemian Theatre based in České Budějovice. Brehms wanted to transform the stage space with a revolving auditorium, remove the restrictive peephole frame and thus discover a new, unified theatre space. The idea was tested in 1958 with a revolving wooden grandstand for sixty spectators. The following year, a new turntable for 400 spectators was built. It was the first revolving grandstand in Europe, along with a similar structure in Tampere, Finland, which went into operation the same year. The latest version has been rotating in the castle gardens since 1994 and now allows 644 spectators to enjoy a unique theatre spectacle.
