Imposing construction. The metal palms should have no technical function, but actually be just art

Why are there palm trees (made of concrete and metal)? Could have been other native trees.

The rumors persisted that the artificial palm trees on the premises of the Federal Intelligence Service (BND) served a sinister purpose. The conspicuous pair of palm trees on the new BND building on Chausseestrasse was a poorly concealed listening device, and the steel palm branches might also cover up surveillance cameras 😀.

The two 22 m high palm trees on the back of the monstrous new building are actually reminiscent of camouflaged cell phone transmission towers, like those found in some tourist resorts on the Mediterranean. Ulrich Brüschke, the creator of the palm trees, also intended to create this similarity. His design idea was "borrowed from real radio towers disguised as palm trees" in keeping with the espionage universe, as it says on the BND website. As part of an inquiry in the House of Representatives, it was said: "The palm trees are art objects" and Ulrich Brüschke is therefore just a harmless artist.

As part of the construction of the new BND building in 2006, there was a design competition for "art in architecture", from which the Brüschke work entitled "0° Breite" emerged as the winner.
