It is good that the wall is still visible, at least on the ground.

Coming to terms with the historical past is as present and important in no other city as in the capital of the Federal Republic of Germany.

After the Wall was opened, it was demolished. So-called "Wall woodpeckers" broke out their souvenirs. An ever-increasing number of new border crossings created numerous gaps in the Wall. Border guards dismantled the signal fence and other elements of the border fortifications. Both the GDR government and members of the border troops began to think about marketing the Wall. Parts of the Wall were sold all over the world.
In June 1990, the systematic dismantling of the border fortifications began on Ackerstrasse between the districts of Wedding (West Berlin) and Mitte (formerly East Berlin), and was largely completed by the end of the year. However, some sections of the Wall were listed as historical monuments by the East Berlin magistrate in 1990, including on Bernauer Strasse.
