The bridge was named after its builder in 1836, destroyed in World War II, and rebuilt in 1992 – initially only as a temporary replacement for the renovated Weidendammer Bridge. Its construction utilized steel components from old elevated highways, with a roadway made of steel plates and asphalt, and sidewalks of wooden planks, giving it an unusual appearance. The temporary structure proved its worth and was eventually retained permanently on the historic abutments and the old river pier.
