The neo-Gothic church, designed by Johannes Otzen and built between 1868 and 1873, has also been used by the Kulturkirche-Altona (Altona Cultural Church) as a cooperative partner since the late 1990s. The church congregation broke entirely new ground at the time with this concept of dual use.

The striking neo-Gothic St. John's Church in Hamburg-Altona was designed by the Berlin city planner and church architect Johannes Otzen (1839-1911). The native of Schleswig-Holstein won a nationwide competition and, between 1868 and 1873, built a four-bay brick basilica with a transept in the neo-Gothic style on what is now Max-Brauer-Allee. It is the first religious building designed by Johannes Otzen, who created a total of 22 churches, including the Ring Church in Wiesbaden (1892-94), and is considered perhaps the most important church architect of the late 19th century.
