If you walk through the beautiful residential area in Harvestehude, you might get the impression that you are in the London district of Notting Hill instead of Hamburg. A small green area in the middle of the residential buildings, the Innocentia Park, completes this picture.
The idea is not too far-fetched, because the complex was designed based on the model of the square London parks, the so-called "Squares". It fit in perfectly with the surrounding residential buildings and the regularly planned streets from the 19th century. After the devastating fire in 1848, the inner city area of Hamburg was architecturally reorganized based on the English model.
And this pattern can still be seen clearly on the former monastery grounds in Harvestehude. Checkerboard-like residential areas still present their magnificent terraced-house style villas today. In the center of this district, the Innocentia Park was created in 1884/85 according to the designs of Franz Andreas Meyer, chief engineer of the building deputation.
The landscape design of the green area is still clearly visible today.
At the centre is an extensive, curved lawn, which nevertheless gives the relatively small park - it is around three hectares in size - a certain sense of space.
Originally there was also a natural pond on the lawn, but this has now disappeared. A belt of trees and bushes surrounds the central lawn and shields the area from the bordering streets.
Dense and open planting alternate, so that views of the beautiful town houses are always revealed. Two hills were built in the east to provide additional views of the park and its surroundings, but these are now only possible to a limited extent.
The park is an important garden monument.

The park is located on the former oak meadow of the Harvestehude monastery and is named after the pope who first confirmed the monastery in the middle of the 13th century, Innocent IV. The Innocentia Park is the oldest park in Hamburg.
In 1884/85 the green area was created based on the London model of a "square". The slightly modeled lawn in the inner area is surrounded by a path.
The clever, backdrop-like planting belies the small area of around 3 hectares. The Innocentia Park with its square floor plan is surrounded by beautiful, historic residential buildings.
You can find the Innocentia Park adjacent to Oberstraße, Parkallee, Innocentiastraße,
      20144 Hamburg.
