The border between the formerly Danish district of Altona and Hamburg once ran along Schulterblatt Street in the center of the Schanzenviertel. The name, officially confirmed in 1841, dates back to an inn that used the shoulder blade of a whale as its sign. From around 1700, the street was popularly called "Beim Schulterblatt" (At the Shoulder Blade). The historic inn sign is on display in the Museum of Hamburg History. Today, Schulterblatt is the Schanze district's party and dining district.
