On the Altona balcony with an impressive view of the Elbe stands what is probably Gerhard Brandes' best-known work: the Maritim sculpture, also known as Drei Fischer, made of embossed copper and erected in 1968.
Three slightly stylized fishermen stand in a group on a stylized ship with outstretched arms and hold an oar in each hand. The motif is reminiscent of the city's maritime tradition, but the formal effect that results from the staggering of the figures and elements is more important.
The horizontally outstretched arms, the vertical oars pointing high in the air and the three figures with the overhanging fishing nets together result in an artfully balanced and memorable composition. The greenish patina of the copper underlines the maritime impression with its reminiscence of sea colors.
