On September 4, 2011, the Heidi Kabel memorial, a life-size bronze figure created by the artist Inka Uzoma, was inaugurated with a ceremony on Hachmannplatz. She died of old age at the age of 95. The funeral service in the St. Michaelis Church in Hamburg was broadcast on NDR. Heidi Kabel was buried next to her husband in the Nienstedten Cemetery in Hamburg. The tombstone bears the Low German inscription "To't Leben Hör de Dood" (German: "To life belongs death").
