The Kaispeicher A is a former warehouse in the port of Hamburg on the Großer Grasbrook in today's HafenCity.
It stood in an exposed position on the Kaiserhöft between Sandtorhafen and Grasbrookhafen.
The first version was built by Johannes Dalmann in 1875 and was also called the Kaiserspeicher in honor of Wilhelm I.
After the destruction of World War II and the later demolition of the first Kaispeicher A, the second Kaispeicher A was built on the same site in 1963 based on a design by Werner Kallmorgen.
In 2007, the outer walls of this warehouse were included in the construction of the Elbphilharmonie by the Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron.
It was completed on October 31, 2016 and put into operation in 2017.

The former Kaispeicher A warehouse in Hamburg's Speicherstadt was once the port's largest warehouse. It was built between 1963 and 1966, based on designs by Werner Kallmorgen,
at the top of the Kaiserhöft. In 2007, the conversion of the building into the Elbphilharmonie concert hall began, based on plans by Herzog & de Meuron. For this purpose, the Kaispeicher was gutted down to its outer walls to make way for the new building, which rises from the base with a glass, sail-like structure. In addition to the large concert hall for approximately 2,150 spectators and two smaller halls (500 and 170 seats), a publicly accessible plaza and a hotel were housed within. The result was the Elphi, Hamburg's new and much-admired landmark.
