Ettlingen Castle is the vibrant, cultural, and social center of the town. In summer, the Castle Festival attracts thousands of visitors to the theater and musicals in the castle courtyard. The castle's most beautiful hall is the Asam Hall, which, thanks to its excellent acoustics, has become one of the region's most popular concert halls.

Throughout the year, the Ettlingen Museum presents stimulating interactive exhibitions on regional art and cultural history, as well as urban archaeology. An extensive program of expert guided tours guarantees an eventful stay with explorations through the historic old town, the castle, and the museums.

Ettlingen Castle dates back to a medieval castle, which was converted into a prestigious Renaissance complex in the 16th century. The castle acquired its Baroque appearance under the reign of Margravine Sybilla Augusta of Baden, who moved her retirement home to Ettlingen in 1727. The impressive paintings in the castle chapel (now the Asam Hall) were created by the famous fresco painter Cosmas Damian Asam.

The history of Ettlingen Castle began with the construction of a castle, which became necessary after Ettlingen was elevated to town status during the Hohenstaufen period, probably in 1192. The still-preserved keep dates back to the time of the castle's further expansion, which the Margraves of Baden undertook after they acquired the town in 1219.

After the division of the Margraviate of Baden among the brothers Ernst and Bernhard in 1535, the construction of a representative new castle complex was intended to clearly demonstrate their power in Ettlingen against the Durlach family. The Renaissance castle, completed around 1600, was designed as a three-winged complex while retaining the medieval castle tower. During the War of the Palatinate Succession, the building was burned down by the troops of the French King Louis XIV in 1689.

In 1727, Margravine Sibylla Augusta (1675-1733), widow of Margrave Ludwig Wilhelm of Baden (1655-1707), decided to rebuild the ruins as a retirement home.

With the Margravine's death in 1733, the castle's decline began. It was initially used as a guesthouse, from 1812 as a military hospital and uniform arsenal, and from 1871 to house a Prussian non-commissioned officer school, until the castle became the property of the city of Ettlingen in 1912.

After various municipal uses, the castle now shines once again in its baroque splendor and is primarily home to the Ettlingen Museum, which includes the city's history, including archaeology, the castle's history in the baroque halls, the Municipal Gallery, special exhibitions, and a wide range of events. Cultural events and the castle festival in the castle courtyard during the summer months add further interest.
