Since 1881 no boats have docked on the Lombards Bridge, let alone steamboats. Nevertheless, it is worth taking a look at the graffiti Gesamtkunstwerk at the closed entrance of the former steamboat waiting room.

The Lombardsbrücke is a road and rail bridge over the Alster in Hamburg.

It marks the old course of the city fortifications that separated the Outer Alster from the Inner Alster. The bridge was named after the Lombard pawn shop, which stood here in 1651 on part of Hamburg's ramparts, the "Bastion Didericus". The originally wooden bridge, last replaced in 1827-1828 by a new building designed by Wimmel, was replaced in 1865 with the construction of the connecting railway from Hamburg to Altona by a stone structure designed by Johann Hermann Maack.

The 69 meter long bridge spans the Alster between the inner and outer Alster in three arches. As early as 1902, it was necessary to widen it from 32 to 48 meters. Four cast-iron four-armed candelabra with five glass balls designed by Carl Börner adorn the bridge and form a characteristic Hamburg photo motif.

The rail traffic will run on four tracks parallel to the four-lane road and connect Hamburg-Dammtor with Hamburg Central Station. Two tracks serve the Hamburg S-Bahn.

Because the old Lombardsbrücke could no longer cope with the increased traffic on its own, the new Lombardsbrücke was added north of the old construction as early as 1953. The bridge, which was designed by Bernhard Hermkes and has a main span of 94 m, was renamed Kennedy Bridge after the Dallas assassination in 1963 in honor of the murdered John F. Kennedy. The golden scissors from cutting the ribbon for traffic handover still hangs in the entrance hall of the Museum of Hamburg History (hamburgmuseum).

The small and somewhat uncanny tunnel under the Lombards Bridge is a very good connection between the Binnenalster and Außenalster. But you do not have to be afraid, it is illuminated and it is constantly used by many people.
