In front of the Evangelical Parish Church stands the statue of Bishop Georg Daniel Teutsch, unveiled in 1899 and designed by the sculptor Adolf von Donndorf. Teutsch (1917 to 1893) was bishop of the Evangelical Church in Transylvania from 1867. He worked as a teacher, theologian, historian and politician. As a supporter of autonomy, Teutsch completed the unification of the Saxon communities in the Saxon Evangelical Church. He strove to preserve linguistic and cultural integrity and, in the second half of the 19th century, vehemently opposed the policy of Hungarianization of education and administration ordered by the Pesta government.
