Laid out in 1856, the Alder Park is one of the oldest parks in what is now Romania. Engineer Seifried was commissioned to plan and supervise the work.

1857-1858 the two main avenues are laid out along the swimming school canal (the swimming school had opened in 1829) and the Schewisbach. At the same time, the planting of various tree species began. The dam was built in 1859, and a year later the bridge over the drinking stream.

In 1865 the inn "Unter den Erlen" (today: Bolta Rece) was opened.

From 1881 the park is in the care of the Sibiu Beautification Association, which continues to plant trees. The glass house was built in 1883, and the first fountain in 1894. In 1898 the music pavilion was built, where the military band gave concerts on Sundays. From 1904 the park is electrically illuminated. In 1927, the municipal stadium, then "Terenul Sportiv O.N.E.F.", was inaugurated on the south side of the park.

In 1938 the Mihai Eminescu monument by sculptor Radu Moga was unveiled.

In 1979 the main avenues were paved, a new dais was built in place of the old pavilion and the old fountain was restored. The children's playgrounds will also be laid out at this time.

The sports stadium was completely redesigned in 1977-1981 and equipped with concrete grandstands for 12,000 spectators. In 1982 the covered grandstand was demolished and the capacity of the stadium increased to 24,000 seats. A sports hall will be set up under the old grandstand. The stadium has an electronic scoreboard. The park currently extends over an area of 22 hectares, with 68 species of trees, 38 of which are native and 30 exotic. The latter come from Japan, China, the Himalayas, Asia Minor, North America, Central America, Algeria or the Alps. We mention: American red oak, mahogany, silver fir, white Himalayan poplar, Austrian black pine, Caucasian fir, Japanese climbing spindle, Virginia juniper, etc. The oldest trees (alder, black poplar, linden, oak) are over 150 years old.

Of exceptional scientific and decorative value are the exotic species from the Far East (ginkgo, thuja, magnolia) or from North America (holly spruce, white pine, thuja, California cypress, red and swamp oak, black walnut, tulip tree, antler tree, American maple and sugar maple, honeysuckle, trumpet tree).

About 95 species of birds nest here. At the edge of the park there is a lido and two tennis courts.
