The Sibiu State Philharmonic Orchestra presents its concert programme in the Thalia Hall, which has a capacity of around 500 visitors. The name Thalia comes from the communist era, when the trade union club of the "Independenţa" factory was based here in 1949. In 1990, the district council decided to restore the building complex. Music was already being played on a wooden stage on the Great Square in 1752. In 1787, the magistrate offered the printer and typesetter Martin Hochmeister the opportunity to set up a modern theatre in the Fat Tower. Hochmeister's commitment had a significant influence on the cultural life of Sibiu, but also of all of Transylvania.
