The Great Square, also known as the Great Ring (Piața Mare), is the central square of Sibiu. It has existed since 1366, when it was created with the completion of the city's third fortification belt. This largest public square in the old town has witnessed the economic activities of Sibiu's merchants for centuries. Citizens' meetings, fairs and even executions were held there. The square is surrounded by representative historical buildings. The fact that this is still the case today is thanks to the architect and city planner Otoo Czekelius, who desperately opposed the communists' plans to demolish the medieval buildings on the north side after the Second World War in order to build several high-rise buildings.
