The Staircase (Pasajul Scărilor) connects the Lower Town with the Upper Town. Built in the 14th century, probably between 1357 and 1366, it was part of the third fortification belt of the medieval town. The Staircase, also called the "Needle Wall", has two stair branches and arches that surrounded the walls of the fortress around the Protestant church. The Upper Town was protected by a defensive wall in two terraces about ten metres high, supported by massive buttresses. These rested in supporting arches on buildings in the Lower Town, many of which were already six centuries old.

Pasajul Scarilor (Stairway Alley) is a captivating stone and brick walkway in the heart of Sibiu. Built in the 14th century, this architectural gem served a crucial role in connecting the Upper Town with the Lower Town, forming part of the third fortification belt that protected the medieval city. Rising some 10 metres high by means of two terraces, the Upper Town's defensive wall is supported by sturdy buttresses resting on arches that rise above the Lower Town's buildings, some of which are six centuries old.

The first building on the south side of the passage houses the "Golden Barrel" restaurant, one of the oldest restaurants in Romania. Legend has it that Mihai Viteazul himself had dined here after the Battle of Selimbar.
