Sibiu, as an important and the largest of the seven original Saxon settlements in terms of area, surrounded itself - after the shock of the great Mongol invasion of 1241, when it was attacked, conquered and partially destroyed - with extensive city fortifications, which were built and constantly expanded from the 13th to the 16th century. For centuries, Sibiu was the most important German fortress in Transylvania. In 1699, the city fortifications consisted of five large and two small bastions, 34 towers and a partially double ring wall. The outer defensive wall of the third ring of fortifications from 1357 to 1366 can be seen today along Corneliu Coposu Boulevard. The renovated complex roughly reflects the state of the fortifications in the second half of the 15th century. Between the roadway and the wall crowned by three towers is a green area that dates back to 1791.

After the Tatar invasion in 1241, Sibiu was conquered between the XIII. and XVI. Entrenched for centuries with massive red brick walls in four tiers. This led to the naming of the city of Sibiu as the Red Castle. The walls stretched for about 4 km and were equipped with 39 defensive towers and five bastions. Today you can see the Soldischbastei, the Hallerbastei and the following towers: Staircase Tower, Council Tower, Zimmermannsturm, Armbrusterturm, Töpferturm, Dicker Turm, Ledererturm, Pulverturm.

The outer defensive wall in the third line of fortifications can be seen along Corneliu Coposu Boulevard. Between the roadway and the wall is a green area that dates back to 1791 and was initially established between the Haller Bastion and the Thick Tower. Later, the green area, also known as the "Promenade of the Invalids", was extended to the Heltau Bastion.

Another part of the wall is along Manegenstrasse, on the eastern side of the Ursuline Church. The wall here has a series of semicircular arches designed to support the observation gallery. At the end towards the Ursulinenkirche, the wall forms two arcades that support a passage gallery to the former monks' court. Currently, this gallery is the connection to Constituţiei Street. The Barber Tower used to be here, near the Salt Gate.

The oldest building in the city of Sibiu is located in its original form in the courtyard of Huet Square No. 2. There is a 30 m long section of the defensive wall of the first row of fortifications from the 13th century. century to find.

The wall on Harteneckgasse, between the Zimmermannsturm and the Töpferturm, was built between 1357 and 1366. Currently the wall looks like in the second half of the XV. Dating back to the 19th century when it was rebuilt in brick and provided with spacious arcades in the lower part that support the observation path.

A part of the protective wall of the third row of fortifications lies between Soldischbastei and Fleischergasse, on Ioan Lupas Street, in the yard of Octavian Goga Gymnasium.

Another part of the defensive wall, over 200 m long, can be seen on Centumvirilor Street, between Odobescu Street and Quergasse, on the former "dog's back" between the Upper and Lower Town.
