St. John's Church is one of the newest religious buildings of the Protestant Church in Romania. The 100th anniversary of its consecration was celebrated in autumn 2012. The church is partly built on the foundations of the former outer city wall. Due to structural defects that became apparent just 26 years after it was built, the previous building had to be demolished. The architectural competition for the new building was won by Josef Bedeus von Scharberg from Sibiu. The new St. John's Church was consecrated on November 10, 1912. Von Scharberg gave the new building an independent architectural language that cannot be clearly assigned to any style. On the outside, the church, with its bell tower and squat gate, was given a character that is playfully and deliberately reminiscent of the appearance of Transylvanian-Saxon fortified churches.
