The Sphere Fountain was created in 1977 by the artist Albert Sous and is one of the most striking modern fountains in the city center. The artwork consists of a tall stainless steel tube containing three spheres that open and close at regular intervals of approximately eight minutes, solely due to water pressure – a technical spectacle that lends the fountain its unique charm. The cascading water falls into a circular basin filled with numerous small ceramic spheres; these originally came from the Jülich Research Centre, where they were used for technical experiments.
