In advance, the abbess Anna Carolina Margarethe van Renesse van Elderen had initiated plans for a new building from 1715 and commissioned the Aachen city architect Johann Joseph Couven to draw up designs.
The church is also reminiscent of the former Imperial Abbey of Burtscheid, which, as an imperial abbey, was an independent territory of the Holy Roman Empire and thus directly subordinate to the king/emperor.

Originally, there was an older Romanesque church on the site, which was first mentioned in documents in 1252.
This Romanesque church received a Gothic choir in 1352 and two bells in the 16th century that have been preserved to this day: the Michael and Sebastian bells.
In 1751, the church was redesigned according to plans by Johann Joseph Couven.
The result was a three-aisled pillar basilica, built by the brothers Franz and Paul Klausener.
