The oldest fountain in the city, the Karlsbrunnen or Marktbrunnen, has seen a lot. In 1792 the statue of Charles was taken away by the French as spoils of war, but was recovered in 1804. Between 1969 and 2014 the original figure stood in the Coronation Hall of Aachen City Hall. With the opening of the Center Charlemagne - Neues Stadtmuseum Aachen, the real Karl has found a new home here. Since then, a replica of Charlemagne has stood in the six-tonne bronze bowl. Due to its appearance, the bronze fountain bowl is also affectionately referred to by the people of Aachen as Eäzekomp (German for pea bowl).

The Karlsbrunnen, also market fountain, is located on the market in Aachen directly in front of the Aachen town hall.

The Karlsbrunnen is the oldest fountain in the city. Since 1620 it has been crowned with a figure of Charlemagne, which was cast in Dinant. The original figure has been in the coronation hall of the town hall since 1969.

The six-ton bronze bowl with a diameter of 3.60 m is called Eäzekomp in Aachen dialect. This term is ambiguous. It can be derived from ore or translated using a pea bowl.
