Aachen's oldest fountain, known as the Charlemagne Fountain or Market Fountain, has a turbulent history. In 1792, the statue of Charlemagne was seized by French troops as war booty, but it returned to Aachen in 1804. From 1969 to 2014, the original figure was displayed in the Coronation Hall of the Town Hall before finding its current home with the opening of the Centre Charlemagne – Aachen's New City Museum.

The fountain now features a replica of Charlemagne in a bronze bowl weighing approximately six tons. This distinctive shape has earned the people of Aachen the affectionate nickname "Eäzekomp" – meaning "pea bowl" – by which the fountain is still known today.

The Karlsbrunnen, also market fountain, is located on the market in Aachen directly in front of the Aachen town hall.
The Karlsbrunnen is the oldest fountain in the city. Since 1620 it has been crowned with a figure of Charlemagne, which was cast in Dinant. The original figure has been in the coronation hall of the town hall since 1969.
The six-ton bronze bowl with a diameter of 3.60 m is called Eäzekomp in Aachen dialect. This term is ambiguous. It can be derived from ore or translated using a pea bowl.
