The Thick Tower (Turnul Gros) was built around 1540 as part of the city's fortifications. By that time, the Ottoman threat had increased, so their defense system was reinforced with bastions that could also carry artillery pieces. Cannons were placed on the platform of the Thick Tower to fire at attackers. With its semicircular shape (similar to the letter U), the tower protrudes about 25 meters above the city's outer wall. The city's first theater was set up in the tower building in 1788, founded by the printer Martin Hochmeister. Theater performances were held here until 1949. After a fire, the "Independenta" factory club was installed on the tower's platform. Since 2004, the Thalia Hall of the Sibiu State Philharmonic Orchestra has been located here.
