Tips

  • WWII bombings left this area seriously damaged. So in the 1960s, following the architectural ideas of that time, this fine example of brutalist architecture was built. It consists of residential and cultural buildings, including europe's largest performing arts centre.

  • Access to the public highwalks of the Barbican Estate is possible from several surrounding streets via stairs and ramps. The complex, built between the 1960s and 1980s, was designed by the architects Chamberlin, Powell and Bon and, in addition to the Barbican Centre - the cultural and conference centre - includes more than 2,000 apartments spread across highly visible residential towers and terraced buildings. Old parts of the city walls and the church of St Giles-without-Cripplegate have been preserved from the pre-war period. This creates a very unique architectural mixture, enriched by green spaces and waterways, which is absolutely worth visiting.
