Bexley to Petts Wood - LOOP section 2 [rewalk]
Rewalking this section of the LOOP, and I think I liked it more this time around.
The first third, along the Cray through Foots Cray Meadow, is really nice, and the last third, through Scadbury Park and Petts Wood is also lovely. Only the middle third, through Foots Cray and…

Hackney Wick up the Lea for a bit
This was intended to be a much longer walk up to Walthamstow for a friend's birthday, but a delayed bus, a delayed train, and West Ham fans going to the stadium delaying lunch meant that we were arriving late and so had to pack it in early and take the…

Bayford to Enfield
Started in the lovely village (hamlet?) of Brickenden, where a quick half at the wonderful pub, The Farmer’s Boy, set us on our way.
Down country lanes and then into the woods, where we had a fun encounter with some curious cows.
Next into Wormley Wood, a beautiful and peaceful…

Crystal Palace and South London Junction Railway
Following the route of a long closed railway line (originally opened in 1865, completely removed in 1956).
The early parts of this are now completely hidden and redeveloped, but traces are still available if you know where to look.
The places where the line is still roughly visible are the…

Dover to Folkestone
This is a great walk, absolutely stunning in places, especially in the Summer.
The first two thirds or so are especially notable, walking along the high cliffs with the sea sparkling below, with the Old Folkestone Road the absolute standout section.
After arriving at Capel-le-Ferne, and a quick-ish stop in…

Benfleet to Leigh-on-Sea
Having enjoyed this back in December last year, I wanted to my wife to see it too — without all the mud.
Nice route through Hadleigh Castle Country Park with its impressive views across the Thames & Canvey, and the beautiful castle itself, then down into lovely Old Leigh —…

Darent Valley - Eynsford to Shoreham
A favourite walk, not too far from home, to see the Darent Valley while the lavender and wheat are still in the fields and be back in time for tea.

Dulwich & Sydenham Woods
Too hot for a long outdoor walk, so did a little ramble around the local shady woods.

Berwick to Alfriston round trip
SAVE THIS ROUTE! Well, the first two thirds anyway. This is an absolute belter of a walk, especially in Summer.
It starts with a walk through fields of crops and wild flowers; wheat up to your knees, chicory up to your chest, corn up to your eyes.
After 5km you…

Gravesend to Cliffe
From the faded glory and derelict industry of Gravesend out through the Shorne Marshes where herds of wild horses graze, past the ruined Napoleonic forts along the wide Thames, through the wetlands of Cliffe Pools and into the tidy village of Cliffe itself.
I really enjoyed this, the weather was…

Rainham to Grays
This is far from the most beautiful stretch of the Thames estuary, but it was a lot more beautiful on a sunny Summer day than the windy February I walked it before.
The early part of the section, on the LOOP, has been spruced up with new walkways and wild…

Eton to Dorney
This was a lovely walk, but I made a massive mistake…
First, the walk. Mostly along the Thames Path, initially in the shadow of Windsor Castle but then into long stretches of riverside path next to meadows and woods, all beautiful in summer green.
Towards the end we turned inland…

Collier's Wood to Carshalton - Wandle Trail and Beddington Farm
From Colliers Wood along the Wandle was absolutely beautiful in the early Summer sun.
I wanted to try out a different route today so took a detour into Mitcham Common and then Beddington Farm; there are lots of new lakes there but you can only see them from some strategically…

Short walk in the woods - Oxleas and Falconwood
We were in Blackheath and the weather was unexpectedly good so jumped on a bus to Shooters Hill and walked through Oxleas to Falconwood.
Beautifully calm woods, the air thick with birdsong, a lovely warm day. Perfect.

I remember going to a Save Oxleas Wood event in the 80s, glad to know it is still there.
