The town hall was built after a competition in 1965 in a modernist style with simple but exclusive materials. Copper and light stone fields are used on the outside. The floor covering in the halls and corridors consists of marble and Bornholm tiles, the wall surfaces are covered with limestone and bronze. A strict rhythm divided into fields can be seen in the façade. At the inauguration, a large, level-adjusting staircase marked the town hall square and the importance of the building.

This facility was given a more contemporary makeover in 2006 with water features used as a paddling pool in the summer, amorphous bench seating and bronze sculptures. Jens Galschiøt's 8 meter high sculpture "The Golden Calf" from 2005 stands as a landmark on the square. The two penguins at the edge of the pool were created by Johannes Hansen in 1973.
