When Fredericia was founded in 1650, the whole city was surrounded by ramparts and moats. So you only had access through Prinsens Port, Kongens Port and Dronningens Port. (Kongens Port and Dronningens Port no longer exists)

The Prinzentor was the main entrance to the city center until the early 1920s. The current gate dates from 1753 when the original wooden gate was replaced.

This gate was the main gate through the wall until 1925. Almost every form of traffic in and out of the city had to pass through this gate. The current appearance of the gate can be traced back to 1753. The brick gate was three times more expensive than earlier oak gates. It was believed that it could last at least 100 years. This forecast turned out to be correct. The gate has now been in use for almost 250 years. The moat was originally crossed over a wooden bridge that could be pulled up. In 1794 the bridge was replaced by today's dam.In front of the gate is the Ravelin - an advanced defensive structure located in front of the city gate. At the same time, the ravelin served to camouflage the gate so that it could not be seen from a distance.Danmarksporten was built in 1924 to relieve the much too narrow Prinsens Port.
