Fredericia was founded in 1650 by Frederik III as a royal fortified town. The king wanted a fortification at Lillebælt. Fredericia's ramparts, which encircle the entire city centre, are among the largest and best preserved in the Nordic countries.
In order to induce residents to move to the new fortified city, some royal privileges were introduced that applied to Fredericia in particular. These included tax exemptions, free building plots, impunity for criminals, the right to asylum, exemption from customs duties and freedom of religion.
