It was built as the city grew and the old fortress gates were no longer sufficient to handle the increasing traffic.
Designed by O. Gundelach-Pedersen, the gate is characterized by its neoclassical architecture. It consists of massive columns separating the sidewalks from the roadway and a barrel-vaulted ceiling covering the entire gate. During construction, an older Udfaldsport gate from the 1860s was discovered, which once served as an escape route.
