Kanalbyen (The Canal City) in Fredericia is a large harborside area in central Fredericia that is being developed into a new attractive district. In the past, the area was industrial, but after the closure of a large company and shipyard, the city has been given the opportunity to grow up to the quay wall with a magnificent view of the Little Belt. The idea of a canal city in Fredericia is anything but new. In fact, it was the founder of the city, Frederik III, who had big plans for Fredericia as a pompous royal city with canals and a castle in 1650.The king's financing of the plans was unsuccessful and neither the castle nor the canal city saw the light of day. But now, a good 370 years later, Fredericia gets its canals.

Kanalbyen, or "Canal City," is one of the most ambitious and exciting urban development projects in Fredericia and Denmark. Where industry and port facilities once dominated the landscape, a modern district has now emerged that uniquely combines living, working, and leisure on the waterfront. What makes Kanalbyen special is the successful transformation of a former industrial area into a vibrant, forward-looking district. The planners have managed to respect the site's maritime history while creating modern architecture that blends harmoniously with its surroundings. The new canals running through the area are not only aesthetically pleasing but also create new waterfront access points, thus providing a high quality of life right on the water. For residents and visitors, Kanalbyen offers an attractive mix: modern apartments with waterfront views, innovative office space, and a variety of leisure opportunities. Cafés, restaurants, and small shops are intended to revitalize the district and make it a meeting place for locals and tourists alike. Green spaces and promenades are also an integral part of the planning to ensure a high quality of life.Kanalbyen is a statement for Fredericia's future. It demonstrates how to preserve the past while boldly exploring new paths to redefine urban space. It is a place that has the potential to significantly increase Fredericia's attractiveness as a place to live and work.
