Only since 1914 has the putto, riding on a dolphin and blowing a horn, announced a new, happy era through the flowing, life-giving water. The current Dolphin Fountain was originally built in 1843 for the 100th anniversary of Friedrich Alexander University as the endpoint of the baroque central axis of the castle garden, merely as a fountain basin with a simple fountain. 71 years later, the sculptor Heinrich Mantel Junior placed the dolphin on top. The current figure is a replica of the original artwork, which was willfully destroyed in 1934.
