On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Friedrich-Alexander University in 1843, the dolphin fountain was built as the end of the baroque central axis. Originally, this fountain only consisted of a fountain basin and a simple pipe from which the fountain sprang. It was not until 1914 that the sculptor Heinrich Mantel Junior erected the horn-blowing putto riding on a dolphin, which heralds a new, happy age with his mount and the approaching, fruit-bearing water. It is a copy of a lost fountain figure that was created by Elias Räntz for the margravial castle of Mon Plaisir. The figure was vandalized in 1934 and replaced with a replica in 1981. Another copy is located at Hofmannstrasse 35.(Source: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schlossgarten_(Erlangen) )
