The Hamburg ramparts were fortifications built around Hamburg between 1616 and 1625 under the direction of Johan van Valckenburgh.

Between 1679 and 1682, the so-called "New Work" to protect the eastern suburb of St. Georg and the Sternschanze in the north-west were added as extensions.

After the end of the French occupation in 1814, the fortifications were demolished and the ramparts and ditches were turned into green areas.

While the eastern part later had to make way for the construction of the Hamburger Kunsthalle and Hamburg Central Station, the western section between Dammtor and Stintfang has been preserved as part of the Planten un Blomen Park and the Old Elbe Park.

The former wall ring is also still clearly recognizable by the streets (Ring 1) that run in a ring around the city center.

Planten un Blomen is located in the heart of the city, surrounded by shopping malls, the Congress Center, the exhibition center and St. Pauli.

The 45-hectare park lives up to its name: magnificent plant borders and flowerbeds delight the eye and invite you to linger. Wide lawns, idyllic streams and small lakes as well as uniquely designed themed gardens promise peace and relaxation. The park, which is accessible from all sides, also invites you to have fun and enjoy your leisure time. The summer concerts in the music pavilion and the colorful water light concerts on the park lake, which take place every evening from May to September, are particularly popular.

The diversity and central location make the park equally attractive for locals and guests of the Hanseatic city.

Large, tree-lined park on the site of the former fortifications, with themed gardens and a lake with fountains.
