Alster-Arkaden

The Alsterarkaden belong together with the Mellin Passage to the oldest shopping and promenade miles of Hamburg. A fabulous view of the Rathausmarkt and the Alsterfleet and the Mediterranean atmosphere are only two reasons to visit the Alsterarkaden. Also, the shopping is wide. After the destruction of the town hall by the Great Fire of 1842, a new building was planned. For the design of the Rathausmarkt at the mouth of the Alster, the Alsterfleet, was created before the traffic jam Schleusenbrücke a basin, the Kleine Alster. Chateauneuf designed for the west side a round-arched arcade in the Italian style, whose original painting was ocher yellow according to new findings, but which should later be plastered white and has retained this characteristic appearance to this day. After various changes in 1951, the original state was restored, the color remained white. The Alsterarkaden are considered a prominent example of the so-called Nachbrandarchitektur.
