In the final phase of the Second World War, underage anti-aircraft helpers had to serve on the "Flakturm IV" at Heiligengeistfeld, and many lost their lives. From 1943 onwards, they fired at enemy Allied bombers from the four anti-aircraft guns on the corners of the bunker roof, while up to 25,000 people sought shelter in the high-rise bunker behind the three-and-a-half-metre-thick walls. Around 1,000 forced labourers had to build the concrete monster in 1942 within 300 days.
