In the final phase of the Second World War, underage anti-aircraft helpers had to serve on the "Flakturm IV" at Heiligengeistfeld, and many lost their lives. From 1943 onwards, they fired at enemy Allied bombers from the four anti-aircraft guns on the corners of the bunker roof, while up to 25,000 people sought shelter in the high-rise bunker behind the three-and-a-half-metre-thick walls. Around 1,000 forced labourers had to build the concrete monster in 1942 within 300 days.

Hiking

A so-called mountain path has been built and planted around the square colossus on Feldstrasse. It's 560 meters up ramps and stairs to the roof. There is a 1,400 square meter garden on the roof for everyone. Around 4,700 plants will make the bunker a natural oasis in the city. Up to 900 people can access the roof garden at the same time - there may be admission restrictions if there are large crowds.
