Built in 1942 by forced laborers, the bunker was primarily used for air defense during the Second World War. Up to 25,000 people sought shelter here during the bombing of the city. Massively built with wall and ceiling thicknesses of 3.8 m, a height of 40 m and an area of 75x75 m, a blast would have been too dangerous, so it is now used as a memorial, contemporary witness, party location and media bunker, various media companies are located here and advertising agencies. They all get green company, because Hamburg is currently building the first, natural landscape roof park in the city as part of the Hilldegarden project.

In the final phase of the Second World War, underage anti-aircraft helpers had to serve on the "Flakturm IV" at Heiligengeistfeld, and many lost their lives. From 1943 onwards, they fired at enemy Allied bombers from the four anti-aircraft guns on the corners of the bunker roof, while up to 25,000 people sought shelter in the high-rise bunker behind the three-and-a-half-metre-thick walls. Around 1,000 forced labourers had to build the concrete monster in 1942 within 300 days.

There are three restaurants on the additional floors of the "Green Bunker": the restaurant "La Sala", the bar-restaurant "Karo & Paul" and the café "Constant Grind".
