Greta (August 31, 1906 in Benzweiler; † January 24, 1994 at Schmiede) was the Simmern original.
On October 7, 1951 at around 6:00 p.m., the brakes of a truck loaded with cement failed and it sped unbraked into the Hotel Hirsch. Margarete Scherschlicht was buried under the cement load. She received a small accident pension and from that day on became more and more whimsical.
Therefore she was also called cement Gretchen or Gretchen.
On August 26, 1994, the Birk family had the bronze statue of the cement Gretchen erected in front of their optics shop in Simmern.

A small woman in bronze stands in Simmern's pedestrian zone. She was a Simmern original and was called Cement Gretchen. Margarete Scherschlicht had bad luck in her life. She came to the Rheinböllen orphanage at the age of three, which goes back to the Puricelli Foundation. She later became a domestic help. In 1951, the brakes on a cement truck failed. The truck crashed into Hotel Hirsch and Greta was buried under the cement. After the accident, Gretchen became more and more whimsical, wore garish clothes, and carried a red umbrella or stick with which she threatened children who were teasing her. Greta was 87 years old and died on the Schmiedel.
