The Schinderhannesturm is the former powder magazine of the medieval city fortifications in Simmern. It owes its name to what is probably the most famous and notorious inmate of the tower, which was later used as a prison. From February 26 to August 19, 1799, the robber captain Johannes Bückler, known as Schinderhannes, was imprisoned here. In the night from August 19 to 20, he managed to break out and escape from the tower, which had been considered escape-proof until then. After being arrested again, he was executed in Mainz in 1803.
In the former dungeon under the roof, the visitor learns everything about "Schinderhannes - Reality and Myth".
