The tannery road in Simmern and the path that runs parallel to the Simmerbach are reminiscent of the former heyday of the tanning trade in the city. The sale of oak bark for the tanneries also meant an additional source of income for many communities in the surrounding area.

All that remains of these buildings is a drying shed. Here the tanned skins were hung out to dry. Side flaps were used to regulate ventilation.

The tanner's shed on the Simmerbach is one of the last architectural relics from the former Simmeren tanners' quarter (Gerbereistraße), which settled on the Simmerbach in the course of the 18th century. The building was used to dry the stretched, tanned leather. The air flow could be regulated via the ventilation flaps. The building underwent a general renovation in 2014 and 2015 and was slightly moved from its original location. A small exhibition on the former tanning trade, the tradition of which ended in Simmern in the 1930s, is to be shown in the building.
