During his visit to Simmern in 1744, Elector Karl Theodor von der Pfalz approved the construction of the Catholic parish church. It was built in Klostergasse between 1749 and 1752 according to the plans of the Electoral Palatinate master builder and foreman Johann Jakob Rischer. The rectangular nave hall is adjoined by a semicircular choir, at the apex of which the bell tower with a hood rises. A two-storey vestibule with portal and flight of stairs connects the church with the former Carmelite monastery built in 1703/04.

The ceiling frescoes by the Mannheim court painter Francesco Bernhardini are of art historical interest: the Adoration of the Child. The original high altar is attributed to the Mannheim sculptor Paul Egell.

It was primarily the Franciscans who promoted worship of the saint as early as the 13th century. Later it was the Jesuits and the Carmelites who gave strong support to his cult and helped lift Joseph out of his contemptible role. In this respect, it was only logical that the Carmelites not only made the saint the patron saint of their monastery church in Simmern, which was newly built between 1750 and 1752, but also gave a lot of space to his life.

The magnificent ceiling painting was created by the Mannheim court painter Francesco Bernardini. The engagement, the so-called miracle of the rod and the birth of Christ are described. Although the two scenes are separated by the wide crossbeam of the stable, they have a uniform central perspective construction. The Nativity is set in the ruins of an ancient building whose mighty marble pillars decorated with gilded roncaille dominate the scene. Mary kneels in adoration before the child on a high pedestal, while the large figure of St. Joseph occupies the left edge of the picture. No longer as an old man, but much younger, with dark hair and beard, he is now depicted with features similar to Christ.

the catholic The parish church of St. Josef was built from 1749 to 1752 according to plans by the Palatine court architect Johann Jakob Rüscher (born around 1668 in Au/Vorarlberg – died 1755 in Heidelberg) from Heidelberg, with the support of the governing Palatine Elector Theodor von Pfalz-Sulzbach.

The interior surprises with the rich, well-preserved furnishings from the time of construction. The nave measures 11 x 25 m; the hall is spanned by a mirrored ceiling. The ceiling painting was painted in 1752 by the Mannheim court painter Francesco Bernardini, as were almost all the other paintings in the church interior.

The high altar, which was changed several times, most recently in 1953, was originally much larger, as well as the sculpture of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on the pedestal and the right angel are attributed to the Mannheim court sculptor Paul Egell.

Above the entrance to the sacristy there is a late Gothic sculpture of St. Stephen with the martyr stones (around 1500), which was taken over from St. Stephen's Church after 1752. In the middle of the corridor below the gallery is the Gothic baptismal font from Ohlweiler, which was already in 1699 in St. Stephen's Church.

In 1753, the Stumm brothers from Rhaunen-Sulzbach supplied the original organ work for the organ. During a restoration by the Voltmann brothers from Klausen in 1895, however, the pipework was significantly changed. The organ was last restored and modified again in 1982 by the Meyer company from Heusweiler/Saar.
