The wooden bridge was built in 1984. It replaced a low dam that divided the canal into two basins.
The bridge was designed as a replica of an older bridge that connected Strandvejen with Oldenborg's Bastion from around 1900 to 1935. It was an extremely popular promenade for the residents of Fredericia. The bridge was removed along with Søndervold and Strandvejen to make way for the harbor. The white bridge remained in the memory of the people of Fredericia, and therefore the "new" white bridge was a welcome addition.
