Meldahls Rådhus is the former town hall in Fredericia and is named after the architect Ferdinand Meldahl. It was inaugurated in 1860. The architect also designed the Marble Church in Copenhagen and the courthouses in Aalborg and Randers.

Fortunately, the stately new town hall survived the bombing of the War of 1864 just a few years after its inauguration. Today the town hall is a historical jewel and a fine example of Danish architectural heritage. The building dates back to a time in Denmark where inspiration was drawn from the rest of Europe. The imposing building represents the northern Italian Middle Ages and the Byzantine style at the same time and is considered one of Meldahl's main works. Since the town hall also functioned as a detention center, this meant that the mayor's office was only about 4-6 meters away from the 10 prison cells.

Cast-iron fields are laid out in the square in front of the town hall with the laws and privileges that Frederik d.3 offered people in return for settling in his new fortified town. Among other things, the king lured with religious freedom, tax exemption, impunity for criminals, free building land, duty exemption and much more.

The town hall of Meldahl was the city's fourth town hall. The fifth town hall is the current one - built in 1965.

Meldahl's Town Hall, the former town hall of Fredericia, is an impressive historic building. It was designed in 1860 by the architect Ferdinand Meldahl, who also designed the Marble Church in Copenhagen. The building combines northern Italian medieval and Byzantine architecture and is considered one of Meldahl's major works. Cast-iron tiles are laid in front of the town hall, reflecting the privileges granted by King Frederik III to the town's first settlers, including freedom of religion, tax exemption, and customs exemption.
Today, the town hall can only be viewed from the outside, but it remains a historical gem and an important example of Danish architecture.

The town hall takes its name from architect Ferdinand Meldahl and was inaugurated in 1860 (on July 6th, of course!). Meldahl also designed the Marble Church in Copenhagen and the Tinghuse (courthouses) in Ålborg and Randers.

Fortunately, the beautiful town hall survived the Prussian bombardment in the 1864 war, just a few years after its inauguration. Today, the town hall is a historical gem and a fine example of Danish architectural heritage. The building dates from a period when Denmark drew inspiration from the rest of Europe. The impressive building represents both northern Italian medieval and Byzantine style and is considered one of Meldahl's major works.

The square in front of the town hall is decorated with cast-iron tiles. They reflect the privileges that King Frederik III offered people who settled in his new, still deserted fortress town. The king attracted, among others, Danish royalty. with freedom of religion, tax exemption, immunity from prosecution for criminals, free building plots, duty-free status and several other privileges.

Meldahl's town hall was the fourth town hall in the city. The first town hall was on the corner of Kongensgade and Oldenborggade, the second in Prinsessegade, opposite the current theater. The third town hall was diagonally opposite Meldahl's town hall. The current town hall is the fifth - built in 1965.
Fredericia's coat of arms with the motto "Pro pace armatus" ("Armed for peace") accurately describes Fredericia's historical importance as a defensive facility.

Since the town hall also served as a detention center, the mayor's office was only about four to six meters from the 10 prison cells!
