The facility is primarily intended for the blind and partially sighted, but must be used by anyone who feels unsafe walking in the water.
The mermaid flutes are made up of a series of long steel rods that form a snail pattern above and below the water, with a rope attached between each rod to guide the bather safely around the water and back to the beach.
