The connection between the Kehrwiederspitze, part of Hamburg's warehouse district, and the old town is established by the Kornhaus Bridge, the Niederbaum Bridge and the Brooks Bridge over the Customs Canal.

The Kornhausbrücke, at the southern end of which the Customs Museum is located, is characterized by two statues from 1903 depicting the seafarers Columbus and Vasco de Gama and at the northern end of the bridge provide an indication of Hamburg's overseas trade.

Unfortunately, the southern statues of Cook and Magellan are no longer preserved. It is one of the so-called truss bridges made of steel.

      Figures at the Kornhausbrücke:
The Hamburg Monument Association has restored the sculptures "Columbus" and "Vasco da Gama" on the Kornhausbrücke in Hamburg's old town.
The two figures and their bases have been extensively cleaned in the last two weeks, old cracked joints have been repaired and earlier stone additions have been color-matched. The executors were the restorer Marion Eifinger and the specialist company Otto Petigk, both from Hamburg. The measure cost the association around €16,000, which came exclusively from contributions and donations from the members.
"In our anniversary year, we wanted to give the Hanseatic city a present," says Helmuth Barth, chairman of the Association of Friends of Monument Preservation. "The entrance to the Speicherstadt and HafenCity should be embellished in the long term with this restoration".
At the same time, the association encourages people to think about restoring the lost sculptures on the south side of the Kornhaus Bridge. The figures of James Cook and Fernando Magellan once stood there. "It would be possible that patrons could be found to complete the bridge saints," says Barth.
The association Friends of Monument Preservation e. V., which celebrates its 25th anniversary in December 2007, is committed to the preservation of cultural monuments in Hamburg, promotes restoration and offers visits, guided tours and lectures.

The Kornhausbrücke was built in the 17th century. If you come from Brandstwiete, it takes you directly over the customs canal to Brookinsel. The municipal granary was located here from 1661 to 1871.

When the customs canal was widened in the 19th century, today's bridge was built. The year was 1887. Since then, the wrought-iron supports have rested on four granite pillars.

The four supporting piers of the crescent-bearer superstructure were decorated in 1903 with sculptures of Magellan and Cook on the Brook Island side and Christopher Columbus and Vasco da Gama on the city side. They were designed by the artists Hermann Hosaeus and Carl Börner. The Columbus sculpture is by Carl Borner. The sculptures on the Brook Island side were destroyed in World War II.
