German production premiered in Hamburg. Since 2 December 2001, the musical is shown in the theater in the port of Hamburg and on January 14, 2014, the anniversary of the 5000th performance was celebrated. Since the theater can also be reached via a direct feeder with ferries, some of the passenger ferries are decorated in the colors of the musical or even named after characters of the play (like the Nala and sister ship Rafiki).

The shipyard H. C. Stülcken Sohn (also Stülckenwerft) was one of the largest shipyards in Hamburg. The company in Hamburg-Steinwerder, founded in 1846, was located directly on the North Elbe between the ferry canal and the Reiherstieg shipyard and was closed after it was taken over by Blohm + Voss at the end of the 1960s.

A large part of the former shipyard site is occupied by two musical theaters owned by Stage Entertainment Germany. The Hafentheater (now the Theater im Hafen Hamburg), built in 1994, has been performing the musical “The Lion King” since the end of 2001; right next to it, the new theater on the Elbe opened in November 2014 with the musical "The Miracle of Bern".

From this location, which can be easily reached by ferry 73 from St.-Pauli-Landungsbrücke, you get a wonderful view of the Elbe and the panorama of Hamburg. Two sculptures by Niki de Saint Phalle and a copy of Salvatore Dali's Space Elephant can be seen on the forecourt. In addition to the view of Hamburg, this visit is free of charge.
