The city of Eger's first town hall on Johannesplatz is no longer preserved. The move to the new market (market square) probably took place during the major city expansion in the 12th century. The building may have been destroyed by a city fire in 1270. The new building was built in the 14th and 15th centuries in the Gothic style on the plots of five town houses. In 1522 the bell tower received a new bell, and in 1537 a large clock was added. In 1697, two town houses adjacent to the south were purchased and the plan was drawn up for a monumental new building of the council house in the Baroque style on seven plots between 1723 and 1727 based on designs by the Prague master builder Giovanni Battista Alliprandi from Verona.
